SPARC MISSION
SPARC was originally funded by a 2011-2012 Kip Tiernan Fellowship Award from Rosie’s Place, Boston, MA. In keeping with the Award’s mission to reduce poverty, promote social justice, and empower women who have no where else to turn for help, SPARC sessions empower each woman to reach for her highest potential in all aspects of her life by enhancing her ability to write and communicate. SPARC aims to evolve the perspectives of women about learning and communicating, not just by practicing skills, but by awakening motivation and confidence in their abilities.
While not a traditional literacy program, in class meetings, participants will experience the “writing process” -- drafting, revising, and peer editing, when appropriate, along with discussions on purpose, clarity, grammar usage, and reasons for using written English in order to communicate more effectively. In conjunction with evolving personal communication, participants will strengthen computer skills such as practicing how to set up a document and print it, conducting simple research on-line, and discovering what types of online sources are most trustworthy.
